Do Not Be Afraid of What You Are About to Suffer

This letter was written to a small church in Smyrna, a city where emperor worship was deeply embedded in public life. To refuse to participate was not just a religious decision; it had social, economic, and sometimes physical consequences. These believers knew what it cost to follow Jesus. And yet Jesus does not open His letter to them with comfort or reassurance that things will get easier. He opens it with honesty: suffering is coming. And then He says: do not be afraid.

That combination, the honest acknowledgment of difficulty alongside the command not to fear, is important. Jesus is not asking these young believers to pretend. He is not offering them a way out of the suffering. He is offering them something different: a reason not to be controlled by fear in the middle of it.

For your generation, the pressure to conform is real. It doesn't always come as outright persecution. Sometimes it comes as social exclusion, being quietly removed from rooms where certain things are celebrated. Sometimes it comes as the subtle weight of a culture that treats Christian faith as naive or irrelevant. Sometimes it comes as watching people with significant power and influence model a way of life that is openly at odds with everything you believe, and wondering if you are the one who has it wrong.

Jesus speaks directly into that pressure. He does not say the pressure will go away. He says: I know your circumstances, I see what you are facing, and I am telling you, do not let fear make your decisions for you. Faithfulness is not the absence of difficulty. It is the choice to keep going in the middle of it. The crown He promises is not a metaphor for a comfortable life. It is the promise that the story does not end here.
