Renamed by Love

Fill in the blank: major, hometown, dorm room, GPA. College has a way of turning you into a series of labels before anyone even learns your name. Somewhere between the icebreaker questions and the bio you are supposed to write for yourself, it is easy to start believing that you are whatever fits neatly into those blanks.

In Isaiah 62, God speaks to a people who had been living under a devastating label. Jerusalem had been called Deserted, and their land had been called Desolate. Those were not just descriptions. They were identities the nation had worn for so long that they had started to believe them. Then God does something surprising. He does not just comfort them. He renames them. No longer Deserted, but Hephzibah, meaning My Delight Is in Her. No longer Desolate, but Beulah, meaning Married. God takes the name that shame had given them and replaces it with a name that only love could give.

Maybe you are carrying a label too, one that was handed to you by a rough semester, a broken relationship, a comparison you keep losing, or a mistake you cannot seem to move past. Maybe it is quieter than a title. It shows up as the voice that says you are behind, you are too much, you are not enough. Here is the steadying truth of this passage. The label you carry is not the last word. God does not just tolerate you. He delights in you enough to give you a new name, one built on His love rather than your track record.

This week, notice the labels you have accepted without question. Then let this verse push back. You are not Deserted. You are Delighted In. That is not a nickname you have to earn. It is a name that has already been spoken over you.
