Giving Back What Was Always His
Scripture
“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.”
1 Chronicles 29:14Reflection
King David had just pulled off one of the biggest fundraising efforts in Israel's history. Gold, silver, bronze, precious stones, all of it pouring in for a temple he would never get to see built. If anyone had earned the right to stand up and take a bow, it was David. Instead, he stood in front of the whole assembly and asked a surprisingly humble question: "Who am I?" He looked at the pile of offerings and realized something that changed the whole moment. None of it was really theirs to begin with. They were just handing God back what He had already placed in their hands.
We are about a month into the semester now. The excitement of the first week has worn off, the syllabus deadlines are getting real, and midterms are close enough to feel. This is usually the season when we start keeping score. How many hours did I study? How much did I give to my friends, my roommate, my ministry, my part time job? It is easy to start feeling like everything good in our lives is something we produced by our own effort, and everything hard is something we are owed relief from.
David's prayer flips that around. Your mind that can work through a hard problem set, your friend who texted you at the right time this week, the meal you ate this morning, the breath in your lungs right now, all of it came from His hand first. Gratitude is not just saying thank you for the extra blessings. It is recognizing that the ordinary stuff was never ordinary. When you see life this way, something strange happens: generosity stops feeling like loss. Giving your time to someone who is struggling, or your attention in prayer, or your gifts to your community, becomes simply returning a gift to the One who gave it.
So as this week wraps up, try David's question on for size. Look back over the last five days and ask, "Who am I, that I got to have this?" Name three specific things, even small ones, and trace them back to the Giver. You might find that the week you thought was just exhausting was actually full of fingerprints of grace.
Prayer
“Lord, everything I have comes from Your hand. My time, my abilities, my friendships, even my next breath. Forgive me for the moments I have acted like I earned it all on my own. Open my eyes to see Your gifts in the ordinary parts of this week. Make me a person who gives freely because I know how freely I have received. Thank You for being a generous Father. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
